🎣 TAGLINE
Join us on the water as we chase the hard-fighting and often overlooked Chum Salmon (aka “dog salmon” / “keta”) in the Pacific Northwest! From tidewater to river-mouths, we’re out hunting these aggressive fighters and sharing tips, tactics, and sights of the fall run.
🌲 WHAT THIS VIDEO COVERS
Why chum salmon are such a unique target — they may not always be the “table-fair” winner, but they bring serious action.
The timing and run pattern in rivers and estuaries of the Northwest (late fall into early winter) when water levels rise and chums push in.
Techniques that work: gear setup, bait and lures, where to position yourself.

Conservation & management context — important regulations, how the species is being managed and restored in systems like the Skykomish River and the larger Puget Sound watershed.

Some “why we do this” moments: the visual spectacle of the run, the connection to habitat, and the fun of a strong fight.
📍 WHERE WE FISHED & WHY IT MATTERS
We head into typical Northwest water — tidal flats, river mouths and lower tributaries where chum congregate and move in with rising flows. These fish often show up later in the season than some other salmon species, and if you can time the push with water changes and tides, you’re in for a treat.

Plus, when you go after chums, you’re also stepping into a fishery with cultural and ecological significance. In many regional systems the runs are being monitored, actively managed and restored.

🛠 TIPS & GEAR TO WATCH FOR
Get your line and leader set up to handle fish in moving water — chums are strong and will test your gear.

Use lures or bait that entice aggressive take-behavior: bright colors (chartreuse, pink, green), hoochies, jigs tipped with shrimp or scented bait, spinners.

Choose spots where fish will hold or pass: deeper holding pools, edges of current, tide-affected sandbars or flats.

👍 WHY YOU’LL LOVE IT
If you love salmon fishing for the thrill of the fight, unpredictable conditions, and the beauty of the Northwest wilderness — chum fishing brings all of that. It’s not always about the biggest salmon; it’s about timing, tactics, nature in motion, and making every cast count.
📅 WHEN TO GO
Typically you’ll want to plan for late fall (October through December, sometimes into early winter) when water levels rise and chum begin their push into fresh and brackish waters.
