A documentary about the wooden drum dance of the Wa people (Chinese: Wa zu mu gu wu, 佤族木鼓舞) of Cangyuan Va Autonomous County (沧源佤族自治县), Lincang (临沧市), southwestern Yunnan province, southwest China, which prominently features the use of log drums (Chinese: mu gu, 木鼓) carved from the trunks of trees. Cangyuan Va Autonomous County borders Gengma County to the north, Shuangjiang County to the east, Pu'er to the southeast, and Burma's Shan State to the south and west.
In the Wa culture, log drums are sacred instruments, their sound being considered a conduit to the heavens, and are used in various large-scale sacrificial rituals related to the Wa people's belief in ancestor worship and animism. As of the early 21st century there are approximately 700 large, medium, and small log drums in Cangyuan Va Autonomous County, and 90% of the local population is able to do the wooden drum dance or sing wooden drum songs (mu gu ge, 木鼓歌).
The Wa (or Va) people (Chinese: Wa zu, 佤族), who speak a language in the Palaungic branch of the Austroasiatic language family, number about 1.2 million, of which about 400,000 live in China (most of the rest living in Burma's Shan State and Kachin State).
Filmed in Cangyuan Va Autonomous County (沧源佤族自治县), Lincang (临沧市), southwestern Yunnan province, southwest China, c. September 20, 2016.
