The Supermarine Seafire was a navalized variant of the famed Spitfire, with wings that folded up and tips that folded down. This July 1945 footage by a U.S. Navy cameraman aboard a British fleet carrier, probably the HMS Indefatigable, shows Seafires taking off unassisted from the deck, and returning after flying short range combat air patrols overhead. Midway in the film, smoke on the horizon marks the demise of a Japanese warplane.
Also seen are good shots of Fairey Firefly attack aircraft and a few Royal Navy Avengers. The insignia on these British aircraft show the modifications adopted in the Pacific to avoid any confusion with Japanese markings by removing red from the roundels, adding U.S.-style white rectangular bars, and placing wing markings on the upper left and lower right wings instead of both wings as was British style.
