Humanoid mechs, which were once widely deployed during the Eurasian War, have since been banned internationally for military use, and are now used exclusively for combat sport. With the end of the war now 25 years in the past, mech battle has become one of the most popular and exciting forms of entertainment, and many people have become battlers in search of wealth, fame, or simply the thrill of battle.

Afraid Gear is a mech-building simulation game, comparable to a cross between Armored Core and Carnage Heart. The player builds and tunes a combat mech, but does not directly control it in combat; rather, the mech is AI-controlled, but can be given commands during battle, with the mech executing them autonomously. Outside of battle, the player can register for monthly tournaments, buy and tune parts from various shops, customize their mech's build, load out, and even colors, and even visit a bar to chat with other battlers to gain information. The player starts in the low-ranked S3 class, and must win tournaments to rank up and win all of the top-ranked S1 tournaments.

In addition to the main simulation mode, the game includes a "beginner mode" which acts as both a story mode as well as an extended tutorial for the game's numerous systems and unique control setup, and there is also a "vs battle" mode where two players can pit their custom saved mechs against one another.
