Hog Slat has recently built a nursery building outside Kirkland, IL, with a capacity of 3,000 heads. The barn is designed to have minimum winter ventilation. To achieve this, a 14-inch pit fan runs continuously, drawing in winter minimum air via two 10-inch PVC tubes in each nursery room. As additional fans stage on increasing static pressure, hallway inlets open to bring more air from the hallway. Air enters the hallway through roll-seal curtains on the outside wall. There are 7.5-ton feed bins that deliver feed into each room, and extra feed and water spaces are designed for piglets in each room.
