South Island - Second Chapter
In this second chapter on South Island NICK LERA rejoins the steam tour down the East coast to Oamaru and Dunedin, paying visits to museum lines in both cities. The doubleheader led by Ab Pacific no. 663 and J class 4-8-2 no. 1211 terminates in the Dunedin’s ornate station. Then no. 663 becomes the first steam loco in 30 years to thunder up the scenic Taieri Gorge of the old Otago Central. Further tracing its remnants its most western extension is now submerged by an artificial lake and never reached the mining area at Goldfields, where 19th century machinery is still kept in working order. The program culminates in a glorious Alpine setting with lake steamer ‘Earnslaw’ built in 1912 sailing from Queenstown and a rarity, an American 2-4-2 built by Rogers in 1878,, racing up to Fairlight Glen with the Kingston Flyer!
