This Gull's Eye Guide is from one of the UK's most visited marinas... Cowes Harbour, situated on the Isle of Wight, a safe haven of activity, beautiful scenery with the unique seclusion of its own island. The Isle of Wight offers great, sheltered cruising with plenty of pretty anchorages making it a hot spot for commercial and domestic cruisers.

Upon approach to the harbour, the iconic Royal Yacht Squadron is one of the first landmarks at the mouth of the Medina River. Moorings run all the way up the Medina and a water taxi can be taken from the main harbour to a popular local eatery and bar, The Folly Inn.

Local berth holders Colin and Celia Ward said "One of the things we most like about Cowes is the range of facilities here. Obviously that's something you are always looking for if you are berthing in a marina, as opposed to just dropping the hook in some out-of-the-way anchorage".

Every year Cowes is home to the globally renowned yachtsman event, The Round The Island Race, which takes place in early summer. Spectators are able to follow the race from different viewpoints throughout the day. Many top sportsmen including Sir Ben Ainslie and Sir Robin Knox-Johnston take part in this spectacular race which is one of the world's biggest sailing events.

As well as Cowes, there is a lovely marina at Yarmouth, just to the west, which has been recently improved with a walk ashore pontoon - instead of the original berthing posts. By taking the tender up the Yar, you can explore and enjoy the natural surroundings of West Wight, including Alum Bay and the Needles. Just east of the Medina is Osborne Bay, overlooked by Queen Victoria's island palace Osborne House overlooking the tranquil Wootton Creek.

There are a number of berthing options available and the harbour has very efficient and hard working staff to keep things running smoothly -- a recommendation is to book as early as possible.
