It is the tallest brick minaret in the world. A UNESCO World Heritage site. A symbol of Delhi that has stood for over 800 years.
Most people come here to look up—at the 72.5 meters of soaring red sandstone. But the real story of the Qutub Minar isn’t at the top. It’s at the bottom. It’s in the pillars, the rubble, and a very specific inscription that many tourists walk past without ever reading. Today, we’re looking at what existed here before the Sultanate—the 27 temples that were dismantled to build this victory monument.
Behind me is the Quwwat-ul-Islam Mosque. It was the first mosque built in Delhi. But look at the stone. It doesn’t look like traditional Islamic architecture from that era.
Right here, in the original 12th-century script, the creators left a record. It states—quite proudly at the time—that the materials used to build this mosque came from the destruction of 27 Hindu and Jain temples.
These weren’t just any temples. This was Lal Kot, the citadel of the Tomar and Chauhan kings.
