Senator, it was been reported that about 160 families have funded approximately 50% of all the campaign donations up to this point for this cycle. Two part question, do you think it was the intent of the Founding Fathers to have a small group of families to be funding more than half the campaigns and what is your personal opinion of this fact?

I’ve always said that when the media stops charging us for advertising, I’ll raise less money.

I can tell you this, that I, people buy my agenda, I don’t buy into anyone’s agenda. That’s why I put my policy beliefs in writing. I wrote it in a book called, “American Dreams”. I’ve given multiple policy speeches. I’ve outline it in writing on our website. People know what I stand for.

If, after viewing what I stand for, someone wants to contribute to our efforts, assuming they are not someone distasteful or something about their background that we don’t want to be associated with, we’ll accept their help. But they buy into my agenda, I don’t buy into theirs.

There’s a lot of things about modern politics, there was no television when the founders founded our country, so there wasn’t the need to raise that much money for these sorts of things. Ultimately, bottom-line is people have a first amendment right to participate in the political process. And that includes by contributing to candidates. Unions do it extensively. There are wealthy donors on the West Coast and across this country that contribute to virtually every liberal cause in America they can come up with and I think people that share conservative values and views should be allowed to participate as well.

Question: So it does not concern you that over half the campaign donations have been made by about 160 individuals?

Again, you’ll have to ask those individuals why they gave the money? I can tell you the people that contribute to me and the people that help me in my campaign are buying into my agenda. I don’t by into theirs. I don’t change my policy positions in order to garner someone’s support. I put very clearly out front what I stand for. Perhaps as much or more than anyone else in this race. I have detailed my policy positions on a variety of issues.

Some people will support me over that, some people will oppose me because of that. There are people out there that will give money that are against me to, because they don’t like what I stand for on a given issue and that’s why we have a Republic. The voters get to decide in the end.
