California and the American Civil War—not a connection many think about, but what I discovered blew my mind!
With no battles fought in California, it’s easy to assume the state played little role in the war. But over 17,000 Californians fought in the conflict, and politically, the state was deeply divided—especially in Southern California, where secessionist sentiment ran strong. Pro-Southern militias like the Los Angeles Mounted Rifles openly demonstrated, and some county officials sympathized with the Confederacy. Even more shocking? Slavery existed and was tolerated in parts of the state despite being outlawed by the state constitution!
From a Confederate stagecoach robbery to famous Civil War leaders stationed in California before the war, this chapter of history is wildly fascinating—you won’t want to miss it! #california liforniaHistory #CivilWar #hiddenhistory
