Me playing the organ at St John the Evangelist Church in Dudley Wood, Cradley Heath, West Midlands.
The organ was built in 1936 by the John Compton Organ Company Ltd and believed to have had 4 ranks of pipes: Diapason, Rohr Gedeckt, Salicional and Viola. The opening recital was given by Jimmy Taylor who was Technical Director at Compton on 23rd May 1936. Like most Compton organs, all the pipework (with the exception of some of the basses) is fully enclosed. However, this organ differs from the usual Compton practice in that only the Salicional rank is fully extended.
In 1979 the organ was rebuilt by Longstaff and Jones of Oakengates, Telford. They replaced the Compton unit chests for Roosevelt chests, removed the whiffletree machine and replaced it with a wooden lever. They also replaced the original Compton relays with solid state action.
In 1992 the original Viola rank was removed and Flute, Oboe and Trumpet ranks added. This work being undertaken by Trevor Tipple which resulted in the present specification:
