Embark on the journey of Champa, Vietnam’s forgotten sea empire. From its origins in the 2nd century CE, Champa thrived as a maritime kingdom — feared as pirates, celebrated as traders, and honored as temple builders. Its kings erected the majestic towers of Mỹ Sơn, Po Nagar, and Po Klong Garai, blending Indian influence with local Cham artistry.
For centuries, Champa clashed with Đại Việt, Khmer, and neighboring powers. From Lê Hoàn’s invasion in 982, the death of King Chế Mỹ An in 1044, to the devastating fall of Vijaya in 1471 under Emperor Lê Thánh Tông, each war marked both glory and tragedy. By 1832, under Emperor Minh Mạng, Champa disappeared from the political map.
Yet its legacy endures: the Katê festival, Apsara dances, saranai music, and UNESCO World Heritage temples still preserve the spirit of a people who refused to be forgotten.
