Kenn Borek Air Douglas DC-3 Turbo (DC-3T / C-FBKB) departs the Ft. Lauderdale Executive Airport (FXE) on RWY 8.
This BT-67 Basler (C-FBKB), operated by Kenn Borek Air, was first manufactured in 1943 and is currently registered and based in Canada. Kenn Borek Air is a Calgary-based airline that specializes in transport services up in the arctic areas of northern Canada. These DC-3's are often seen fitted with wheel skies for glacier and snow operations. Why this aircraft happened to be in South Florida, I have no idea. I was not expecting to see this departure either as it was not published on FlightAware! I had stopped by the observation area for a few minutes on my way home and the next thing I knew, this DC-3 was taxiing right towards the RWY 8 run-up area. I was actually on a phone call when I first saw it, so I immediately hung up and grabbed my camera.
C-FBKB has undergone a complete refurbishment which classifies it as a BT-67 Basler. The conversion includes retrofitting the airframe with Pratt & Whitney PT6A turboprop engines, extending the fuselage, upgrading the avionics, and enhancing the structure of the aircraft. I am still unsure of where this aircraft was departing to, but I do know that it arrived from an airport in Mississippi a few days earlier. This was one of the most impressive aircraft I've ever seen. Any additional information is welcome. Thanks for watching!
