Nurses and midwives are threatening to shut hospital beds and cancel planned surgery in Victoria in a bitter pay dispute with the government.
Nurses are saying this is their “last resort” as “no one is listening,” according to Sky News Melbourne Reporter Holly Stearnes.
“About 700,000 nurses and midwives have now voted to increase industrial action after turning down a pay increase of three per cent yearly for permanent staff,” Ms Stearnes said.
“Now the state government will essentially have two weeks to come back with a better pay deal or risk the nurses here shutting down one-quarter of hospital beds and one-quarter of elective surgeries come May 17.
“As of next week, they will implement what has been dubbed as stage one; this will mean that nurses will stop working overtime.”
