Houston Soul: The class of 1966
This video was created to highlight the level of talent present in Houston during the 60s The idea is not new; it has been tucked away in the corners of my mind for decades. It seems like yesterday Dobie Malone and I walked into the back door of the Manhattan Center in NYC guitars in hand. People everywhere, some could not find seats. As we passed those standing near the facility, they looked at us intensely; we looked back. That look was clear to Dobie and me; it was like they were saying. ‘I’ve got to see this’ for myself, not with words, but with their eyes. They had heard our music on the radio, but the concept of good musicians coming from down there in southeast Texas would take some getting use to. As I changed into my tight uniform, the thought came to me, 'they don’t know about Houston’. They were not aware of Beau Williams, Eugene Gambell, Trudy Lynn, Clarence Hollimon, John Roberts, the great Gospel guitarist Grant Malone and so many more: they just did not know. So, we randomly selected four acts that we knew from high school, and had worked with at some time, at that time they were just young guys. They were chosen randomly; however, one later had a million selling record with his group, one was a close friend to Billy Preston, another sang for a President of the U.S., and finally, one was just a dam hard singing soul stirring dynamic entertainer. Around 1966 we competed with these guys on local talent shows while still in high school in Houston… THEY ARE QUALIFIED!!!!
