Motion of a Mass Attached to a Vertical Spring
XI – Board of Intermediate Education Karachi
When a mass is attached to a spring vertically, the spring stretches due to the weight of the mass. The spring extends until the upward spring force balances the downward weight. This position is called the equilibrium (mean) position.
If the mass is displaced slightly upward or downward from this equilibrium position and then released, it starts oscillating about the mean position.
The restoring force acting on the mass is directly proportional to the displacement from the mean position and acts in the opposite direction. Therefore, the motion of the mass is Simple Harmonic Motion (SHM).
