In this video, we will discuss the crimes committed by a bottle of my favourite chocolate jam and coming to grips with what it says on the label. What if it isn't true?? Has it lied to me? What are the chances?? (of a Type 2 Error, that is.)
In mathematical terms, we do not reject a stated truth (null hypothesis) if it passes all our tests or the p-value is greater than the significance level. But it isn't necessarily true until we confirm what's real or factual, possibly through hundreds of tests. If the fact or reality conflicts with the stated truth, then we have made an error in our tests. This is a Type 2 Error (or Type II Error).
NOTE
This is NOT the same as calculating a p-value, which involves testing ONE sample mean. The probability of a Type 2 Error involves the ENTIRE RANGE of tested sample means which do not reject the null hypothesis.
