Practicing below tempo at a medium speed with the metronome is a useful way to improve accuracy and musical detail while securing a strong rhythmic foundation. Regular medium speed practice also results in the freedom to play around with rubato and other expressive tempo changes at a final tempo without them becoming exaggerated or distorted.
