Over the past decade, member countries in the Gulf of Guinea (GoG) have implemented a wide range of interventions to combat illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing, encompassing frameworks, policies, and the deployment of advanced technologies. Yet
IUU remains endemic at multiple levels of society, a reality that has corroded public trust in fisheries enforcement mechanisms, threatened food security, and weakened economic well-being of coastal populations.
IUUF’s resilience – despite the raft of regulations and regional programmes created over the last decade – continues to underscore the limitations of top-down policy and legislative responses.
Effective strategies must account for the social drivers and enablers of IUU practices, as well as the contexts in which they occur. Over the past decade, there has been a growing interest in leveraging technological solutions to combat IUU fishing in the Gulf of Guinea. The joint report by the Gulf of Guinea Maritime Institute and the Atlantic Centre on IUU fishing in the Atlantic offers valuable insights and analysis on these issues.
