Clean hydrogen production remains one of the biggest challenges in the global energy transition. A new study published in Nature Energy reports that excitonic quantum superlattices made from indium gallium nitride and gallium nitride can improve photocatalytic water splitting efficiency by extending charge carrier lifetimes through engineered internal electric fields. In laboratory tests under concentrated sunlight, the system achieved solar to hydrogen efficiencies above 3 percent, with outdoor demonstrations showing continued hydrogen generation under high solar intensity. While not yet commercial scale, the research demonstrates how quantum engineered materials could improve direct solar hydrogen
production.
