The Votivkirche in Vienna is one of the city's largest and most important and beautiful churches. It was completed in 1879, following a construction period that began in 1856. The church was built as a symbol of gratitude after Emperor Franz Joseph I survived an assassination attempt in 1853. The Votivkirche is a stunning example of Neo-Gothic architecture, characterized by its twin spires and intricate (nearly white) façade. Inside, it features impressive stained glass windows, a high altar, and several chapels, including the beautiful Antwerp Altar, a masterpiece of late Gothic art.
