What is going on with the chicken feed and lack of egg laying?

Many factors impact this process: light, nutrition, calcium or protein, age, molting, colder weather. Sometimes the girls are just plain finicky about laying… they are not machines and things change in their environment and internal health.

Can the feed be the cause? Technically, yes… but you have to look at all the other factors. Primarily, right now is winter which means three things:

1. Less daylight (which they need to signal their reproduction system)

2. Typical molting time to get feather-ready for the seasons

3. It’s cold and their energy is diverted

You also want to make sure you offer calcium for them to take as they need, and I like to supplement their diet with occassional scratch grains, protein-rich snacks (dried mealworms & soldier fly larvae), and lots of kitchen produce scraps. Multiple food sources means better overall health, just like humans. This also could account for why a switch in food or kitchen scraps can cause them to lay all of a sudden. They got a different boost of nutrition they might’ve needed.

I’ve also seen that people are making their own feeds and using cat food, goat food, and birdseed. While in small amounts these might be okay, these items are not formulated for chicken health to sustain their dietary needs, and if you don’t know what you are doing you can kill your birds. Def no eggs then. Too much protein can cause liver failure.

Also keep in mind that these companies have actual scientists and federal regulations to follow. If something is lacking there, it would prob be recalled and all over the news.

Research everything and don’t take a few accounts as the gospel. Even news articles are debunking this as a conspiracy theory.
