How to care for tree ferns, Dicksonia Antarctica.
Buy from a reputable dealer, ask questions to gauge seller’s level of knowledge and existing care, have a good look at the tree fern with your own experience, test the weight of the tree fern if it too light it may be dehydrated
Positioning. They prefer shady humid spots, if in dappled shade or full sun water often in the growing season. Allow for the ultimate width of the fronds/croziers – up to 5 feet!
Planting. Can be planted into the ground, rested on top of the ground or put in pots/planters. Make sure planters are stable to avoid blowing over. If placing on ground consider staking to stop falling over.
Water and feed in the crown. A good soaking. We water ours daily in the summer. Feed weekly with liquid seaweed and a small handful of pelleted (4 or 5) chicken manure into the crown. No need to feed in winter. Don’t allow to dry out at the crown, water the trunk and roots if you wish to improve humidity.
Roots, the trunk will root, but it is debatable if this helps the living plant at the crown. It probably does in smaller specimens and potentially in larger ones too, but best practice seems to be to take care of the crown with watering and feeding.
Fronds start to appear in spring. Be patient and don’t panic, start watering gently when the weather warms up, if the fronds have died you may remove them with loppers, if the crown starts to close keep it moist (and therefor soft) and it will open up again.
The cost is approximately £70 a foot currently but does vary.
