On 10 March 2025, the container ship MV Solong collided with the oil tanker MV Stena Immaculate, which was at anchor in the North Sea off the coast of East Yorkshire.
The outcome for the two vessels involved in the March 10, 2025 collision differed significantly:
Solong (Scrapped): The cargo ship was declared a constructive total loss after suffering extensive fire damage. In August 2025, it was towed from Aberdeen, Scotland, to Ghent, Belgium, to be dismantled at the Galloo scrapyard.
Stena Immaculate (To be Repaired): Although it suffered substantial damage and the loss of over 17,500 barrels of fuel, the tanker was not scrapped. In October 2025, Stena Bulk sold the vessel to a new owner who intended to carry out full repairs at the Desan Shipyard in Tuzla, Turkey. Prior to this transfer, the ship was reflagged from the U.S. to Malta.
The total insured losses resulting from the collision between the MV Solong and the MV Stena Immaculate are estimated to range between $100 million and $300 million.
These costs cover a variety of factors, including the physical damage to the vessels, salvage operations, environmental cleanup, and legal liabilities
