The first-ever *U.S. Presidential Election* in 1789 wasn’t just about choosing a leader—it was about laying the foundation for the *American presidency* itself. Unlike modern elections, there were no nationwide campaigns or debates. In fact, *George Washington* didn’t even want to be president. His humility and reputation as the victorious general of the *Revolutionary War* made him the natural choice, and his reluctance only added to his appeal.

The Electoral College, newly formed by the *U.S. Constitution**, was tasked with choosing the president. All 69 electors cast their votes for **Washington**, making him the **only president in U.S. history* to be unanimously elected—a feat that’s never been repeated.

Washington took the oath of office on **April 30, 1789**, in New York City, which was then the nation’s temporary capital. He gave his inaugural address on the balcony of **Federal Hall**, setting the precedent for future presidential inaugurations. Despite the enormous task of leading a new nation, Washington remained committed to democratic principles, turning down any notion of kingship.

Interestingly, in 1789, there were no political parties, as the Founding Fathers feared factionalism. The Vice President was chosen based on the second-highest electoral vote count, leading to *John Adams* becoming the nation’s first vice president—a system that wouldn’t last long due to later political disagreements.

*Washington’s presidency* established many of the traditions we take for granted today, such as forming a **Cabinet**, delivering the **State of the Union address**, and voluntarily stepping down after two terms, ensuring that the presidency would never become a lifetime position.
