Do you shut down during conflict? Go quiet, blank, or unable to speak, even when you want to explain yourself?
This video explains why that happens, and why nothing is wrong with you.
Conflict doesn’t always look like yelling or raised voices.
Sometimes, it looks like silence.
In this video, I talk about why some people shut down during conflict. Why the mind goes blank, words disappear, and the body seems to freeze during tense conversations or arguments.
This isn’t avoidance. It isn’t manipulation. And it isn’t a personal failure.
We’ll explore:
What shutdown during conflict really is
Why your nervous system may freeze instead of fight or flee
Why speaking feels impossible in the moment
How shutdown differs from stonewalling or avoidance
Practical tools to stay present and feel safer during difficult conversations
I also share how this experience can connect to neurodivergence, including autism, something I speak about from lived experience. I’m autistic and ADHD, my children are autistic, and my husband is ADHD, so this topic is close to home for us.
If you’ve ever thought:
“Why do I go quiet when things get tense?”
“Why can’t I say what I mean in the moment?”
“What’s wrong with me?”
This video is for you. Nothing is wrong with you. Your nervous system is doing its best to protect you.
