In sci-fi movies everyone zips around in big spaceships, complete with a large, well-equipped "sick bay." In the (current) real world, space capsules and space stations are relatively small and cramped. And, except for the Apollo missions, they're all near Earth and so getting back down here if you're sick up there is at least feasible. But what if you're orbiting the Moon or en route to Mars? There's no ambulance service out there to bring you back here. And even if there was, it could take days, weeks, or even months to get back. There are also those on Earth who live in remote places, including in Canada, where the problem can be similar. Not to mention the issues of ongoing medical support so you can recover in your community. So, how to effectively deliver timely and sustained medical services in such situations? Dealing with this problem for both space travellers and remote residents on Earth has some surprising parallels, meaning that some technology solutions for one can be shared with the other. As with so many things developed for space, they can have benefits to those down here who will never get closer to space than watching sci-fi movies.
So please join us on April 2, 2024 to hear Amol Karnick, CEO of KA Imaging, and Adam Gryfe, COO of Canadian Space Mining Corporation, enlighten us about the problems to be solved and the innovations they are developing to solve them.
