Deep in the Kinnaur district of Himachal Pradesh lies one of India's
most ancient and lesser-known festivals — Raulane. Celebrated in Kalpa,
Kothi, and the Sangla Valley, this 5000-year-old spring ritual marks
the farewell of the Saunis — mountain fairies believed to descend to
the villages every winter to protect the people.
As spring arrives, the entire community gathers to bid them goodbye
in a ceremony unlike anything you've ever seen.
What you'll see in this video:
▶ The Raula — the ceremonial figure whose face is draped in red Gachchi
cloth — leading the procession
▶ Pundlu — the mysterious sheepskin mask characters
▶ Kinnauri folk music, dance, and community celebration
▶ The breathtaking snow-covered landscapes of Kalpa
