Why did the White/European descendants in the West Indies largely disappear? Although nowadays the people of the West Indies are largely of Afro-Caribbean stock from the Trans-Atlantic slave trade, before the mass importation of African slaves, the majority of most of these islands were actually of European descent, either English, Irish, Scottish, Welsh, Spanish, Portuguese, French, German or others. Over the course of only a few decades the vast majority of Whites in these West Indian colonies would move on to other British colonies such as the US or Canada and were largely replaced by African slaves from West/Central Africa. There are only a few thousand individuals of full European descent dating back to the colonial age in the West Indies today although they have now been largely outnumbered in most areas by more recent White immigrants from the USA, Canada, the UK or other European countries such as Spain or Portugal.
