Lone Star Geyser is so called because when it was first discovered, it was believed that Lone Star was the only geyser in the area, but that is now known not to be true. In fact, because of its isolation, Lone Star was originally called Solitary Geyser, but those of you who have may have seen our Old Faithful Observation Point and Solitary Geyser virtual Yellowstone tour, will know that that name has been given to another geyser which is all by itself, but in the Upper Geyser Basin.

Lone Star Geyser's eruption times are not regularly predicted, but every now and again a prediction time crops up, and that was the case with this video. I was at Old Faithful when I checked the Geyser Times app, and noticed that Lone Star had been predicted, quite out of the blue. This was the first time I had noticed that all season. I jumped in my car, drove to the Lone Star trailhead which is just about in the Kepler Cascades parking lot, and grabbed my mountain bike out of the back and raced down to Lone Star.

The National Park Service (NPS) asks the public to notify them of Lone Star's eruption times if someone is lucky enough to see it erupt. That way the NPS can get a better understanding of how the geyser functions, and perhaps also predict it every now and again.

The trail to Lone Star Geyser follows an old service road which runs off the Grand Loop Road, although cars are no longer allowed. As mentioned before, you can take your bicycle on the trail, although you'll need to park it at the end of the trail, before you get to Lone Star itself.
