I took this video on the night of November 6, 2012, while volunteering with the Mainers United Yes On 1 campaign at the official election night watch party in Portland, Maine. This was the moment President Obama was declared victorious in his re-election bid. Soon after, the Mainers United leaders and community organizers would take the stage to announce the first successful people's referendum in the U.S. in which the voters of Maine said Yes On 1 voting to bring the freedom to marry to gay couples across the state.
Today (when I re-posted this video) - June 26, 2013 - the U.S. Supreme Court declared the heinous Defense of Marriage Act unconstitutional, striking it down. The Supreme Court also dismissed the odious Proposition 8 appeals, effectively letting stand the lower federal district court ruling that had already declared Prop 8 unconstitutional.
The rejoicing that night back on November 6, 2012, in Maine, Maryland, Minnesota, and Washington to historic gay equality victories at the ballot box is surely repeated tonight all over America, especially in states with legal same-sex marriage, and especially in California. :)
