Paracelsus (1493–1541) was born Theophrastus von Hohenheim in Einsiedeln, Switzerland, and spent his life wandering across Europe—from the mining towns of Austria to the universities of Basel, the battlefields of Italy, and finally to Salzburg, where he died at forty-seven.

Franz Hartmann (1838–1912) was a German physician turned Theosophist who worked alongside Helena Blavatsky and later founded the German Theosophical Society.
