Two years into skiing and somehow I ended up on the start line of the Inferno — one of the toughest amateur downhill races in the world. 1,200 metres of vertical, a black-rated race course, and absolutely no idea what I was in for.
The Inferno race runs from near the top of the Schilthorn all the way down to the village of Winteregg in Mürren, Switzerland. The fastest competitors finish in 6-7 minutes. I was aiming for 12. What I got was something in between — sore legs, a lot of people flying past me, and one of the best days I've had on skis.
Before the race, we got exclusive early access to the top of the mountain and breakfast at the Gloria 360° rotating restaurant on the Schilthorn — the views at that hour with fresh snow on the course were something else entirely. Then it was game time.
Did I fall? No. Did I get overtaken by what felt like half of Switzerland? Absolutely. Would I do it again? Without question.
Whether you're a seasoned racer or someone who just wants to see what it looks like to be very much out of your depth at a historic race — this one's for you.
