A Ukrainian skeleton racer says he will keep fighting to wear a helmet honoring fallen athletes at the Milan-Cortina Winter Games, despite the International Olympic Committee banning it from competition.
Vladyslav Heraskevych was told he can wear the helmet during training, but not during races, after the IOC ruled it violates rules barring political statements. The helmet honors more than 20 Ukrainian athletes and coaches killed since Russia’s invasion.
The IOC offered Heraskevych a black armband as a compromise, but he rejected it. A serious medal contender, Heraskevych finished fourth at last year’s world championships and served as Ukraine’s flag bearer at the opening ceremony.
