Joey Tafolla - ' Eternity's end ' solo

Never thought I'd be able to pull it off in one take, playing the 3 guitar solos and the ending unisono solo (and the rhythm part !) : a veritable tour de force, a devilish rollercoaster ride where you need to be on your toes at all times focusing on the notes at hand and anticipating those that are coming as this relentless duel between guitar and keyboards (played by Tony Macalpine) unfolds at a blistering pace ! Luckily Tony didn't bring his guitar or I would be slaughtered on the spot seeing how he had released both the Project Driver and Maximum security albums in previous years !

Tafolla is - together with Malmsteen, Macalpine, Gilbert, Moore and Howe - one of my favorite Shrapnel shredders : guys who introduced the term 'shredding' but at the same time knew how to write a tune, a concept lost on the new generation of technical players.

Joey just did the one neoclassical album (Out of the sun) but it's a real gem filled with memorable melodies and amazing shred solos. There's guest spots from Paul Gilbert who does some of his best playing ever and of course there's Tony Macalpine on keyboards being the virtuoso that he is and helping out with the arrangements. Finally, on bass we have the terrifying and often mourned Wally Voss (ex-Yngwie Malmsteen) teaming up with the highly original Reynold Carlsson on drums proving to be a very powerful rhythm section.

Tafolla's solo style is characterised by fluid, free floating left hand phrasing and a very aggressive right hand pick technique or as my friend Bert put it 'he's really attacking those strings' :-)

At this time I'd like to take a moment to thank Swedish axe slinger Peter Lidström (check his Youtube channel) for all the transcriptions he posted on the internet and also the ones he personally did for me. He was one of the first to correctly transcribe some of the hardest shred solos ever (like the one you are listening to now) and although I did some revisions and a lot of my own over the years I really couldn't have done it without him seeing how he saved me a ton of work ;-) So, here's to you, Peter....Thank you !!
