THE STORY:
Loretta Webb was the second of eight children born to a coal miner in Butcher Hollow, Kentucky. By fifteen she was married to Oliver "Doolittle" Lynn. By the time she was a grandmother at 29, she'd taught herself guitar and started writing songs about her life.

"Coal Miner's Daughter" was released in 1970 and became the title of her autobiography and the Oscar-winning 1980 film starring Sissy Spacek. Every word in the song is true — the cold floors, the hard work, the pride in having nothing but love.
