On January 21, 1924, Vladimir Lenin appeared stable and alert at his estate outside Moscow. Then, suddenly, he began convulsing and died within minutes. He was fifty-three years old. The official cause was atherosclerosis, but key details surrounding his death have remained hidden for more than a century.
Only eight of the twenty-seven doctors who treated Lenin signed his death certificate. His two personal physicians refused. No toxicology tests were ever performed, and the autopsy report was rewritten multiple times. Lenin had survived an assassination attempt in 1918, lived for years with bullets lodged in his body, suffered a series of strokes, and in his final months openly turned against Joseph Stalin, calling for his removal as General Secretary.
This documentary examines three competing explanations for Lenin’s death: chronic lead poisoning from the bullets, neurosyphilis, and deliberate poisoning by Stalin. Drawing on medical records, eyewitness accounts, and modern neurological analysis, it explores why Lenin’s medical files remain classified to this day and what the Soviet state may still be hiding about the death of its founder.
