British Airways Flight 5390 was a significant aviation incident in 1990 that led to important lessons in aviation safety. Captain Tim Lancaster was partially sucked out of the cockpit window after a windscreen panel blew out at an altitude of 17,000 feet. Miraculously, the flight crew managed to hold onto him while the co-pilot, Alastair Atchison, took control of the aircraft and safely landed it in Southampton.
The accident was caused by improperly installed bolts on the windscreen panel, which were too small for the frame. This incident highlighted the importance of proper maintenance procedures and thorough inspections in aviation safety.
The TV series Mayday (also known as Air Crash Investigation) often investigates such accidents, detailing the technical failures and human errors that lead to aviation disasters, showing how these tragedies have influenced safety improvements over time.
