Topic: Zakat, Fitrah & Spending in the Path of Allah | A Beautiful Incident of a Sahabi
In this powerful bayan by hazrath Moulana Qari Rayees Ahmed Khan Qadri Bangalore. we reflect on the importance of Zakat, Sadaqah, and spending in the path of Allah (Fi Sabilillah). Islam teaches us that wealth is a trust from Allah, and the true success lies in using that wealth to help others and earn the pleasure of Allah.
Allah says in the Qur’an:
“Those who spend their wealth in the way of Allah are like a seed that grows seven ears; in every ear is a hundred grains.”
(Surah Al-Baqarah 2:261)
This means that when a person gives charity sincerely for the sake of Allah, Allah multiplies the reward many times over.
Importance of Zakat in Islam
Zakat is one of the five pillars of Islam. It is not just charity but an obligation upon every eligible Muslim. Zakat purifies our wealth and helps remove poverty from society.
Allah says:
“Take from their wealth a charity by which you purify them and cause them increase.”
(Surah At-Tawbah 9:103)
By giving Zakat:
Our wealth becomes pure
Our hearts become less attached to material things
We help the poor, needy, and oppressed
How Much Zakat Should Be Given?
Zakat is 2.5% of your total savings and wealth that has been held for one lunar year, if it reaches the Nisab (minimum threshold).
This includes:
Cash savings
Gold and silver
Business assets
Investments
If your wealth reaches the Nisab and one year passes, 2.5% must be given as Zakat.
What is Fitrah (Zakat-ul-Fitr)?
Zakat-ul-Fitr (Fitrah) is a charity given before Eid-ul-Fitr. It is obligatory on every Muslim who has the means.
The purpose of Fitrah is:
To purify the fasts of Ramadan
To help the poor celebrate Eid
It must be given before the Eid prayer so that the needy can also enjoy the day of Eid.
Value of Fitrah
Fitrah is usually equal to the price of around 2–3 kg of staple food such as wheat, barley, or dates.
Many scholars estimate it according to local food prices. In many places today, it is roughly the cost of basic staple food for one person.
Spending in the Path of Allah
Charity is not limited to Zakat alone. Islam encourages Muslims to give Sadaqah regularly.
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“Charity does not decrease wealth.”
(Sahih Muslim)
Instead, charity:
Brings barakah (blessings) in wealth
Protects from calamities
Earns immense reward in the hereafter
Even a small amount given sincerely can be very valuable in the sight of Allah.
Final Reminder
Ramadan is the best time to increase our charity, pay our Zakat, and help those in need. Let us remember that whatever we spend in the path of Allah is never wasted. Allah promises to return it with greater blessings in this life and the next.
May Allah accept our Zakat, Sadaqah, and good deeds. Ameen.
