Why is maintenance needed on an electric gate?

Just like you get your car regularly serviced, as it has moving parts you need to get your electric gate regularly serviced, too. The motors in the ground can get clogged up with rubbish, mud and dirt that can stop it working efficiently, or working at all. An electric gate is classed as a machine and so it has to comply with machinery directives. Therefore, if it goes wrong, there can be consequences – not only to the lifetime of the installation but, if safety devices fail, there could be serious consequences for someone using it.


What type of electric gate maintenance is needed?

When Green Light Electrical is carrying out a service on an electric gate, we are checking all the safety devices to make sure that they are still fully operational. We lubricate all the moving parts, to ensure that they are not going to have to strain to move, which would cause damage and problems in the future. We carry out several spot force tests to make sure that nothing's changed - a lot of power flows through the gates and it can fluctuate due to the surrounding temperature. We check for any failings in the control panel and we also take the control panel out to remove any bugs, slugs or any debris that could get on to the circuit board and cause the control panel to malfunction and blow up – slugs are a control panel’s worst enemy!

How often will electric gate maintenance need to be carried out?

For residential properties with average use, it will generally be once a year. It should never be less than annual but it could be more frequent if the gates are used a lot, i.e. if the gate is being opened and shut 50 or 100 times a day. For electric gates at commercial properties, the traffic is usually high so we would service these gates every six months. In rare circumstances, it may even need to be quarterly.

How much are maintenance costs for an electric gate?

At Green Light Electrical, we provide silver, gold and platinum service plans. Although we do still offer annual servicing, our customers are predominantly choosing our service plans. The platinum service plan starts at £55 per month and covers all parts and labour, guaranteed for the length of the service of the plan.
The silver package is basically a one-off service. It costs £20 per month and includes a 10% discount on parts and labour.

Do electric gates come with warranties?

The warranty on the components provided by a manufacturer for an electric gate is dictated by the brand you choose. An example is the electric gate brand, Came. They provide a three-year warranty as long as the electric gate is serviced in accordance with their maintenance schedule.
