To launch our show on the history of the #IndianRupee in Mumbai, Sarmaya founder Paul Abraham sat down to a conversation with our exhibition curator Dr Shailendra Bhandare. Where did the word 'rupee' come from? When did we start using coins in India? Why did people in Africa, Europe and East Asia start using the rupee? These are just some of the fascinating aspects of Indian monetary history that our speakers get into.
Our exhibition 'Odyssey of the Rupee: From India to the world', curated by Dr Bhandare, Senior Curator at the Ashmolean Museum, University of Oxford, will be on 10am-5pm, Tues-Sun, till 31 Jan 2026.
