Lionfish in their native waters are a spectacular sight, but in the Western Atlantic, Caribbean Sea, and Gulf of Mexico, they are in invasive species that wreaks havoc on the ecosystem. They reproduce rapidly, have voracious appetites, and have no natural predators there. Programs to aid in reducing their numbers include spearfishing by divers. On a recent trip to Belize, we took a PADI course to learn how to safely spear and remove them. Knowing our efforts will help protect the native fish and reefs made it satisfying, and the resulting ceviche the resort chef concocted was scrumptious.
