This last song of a dying soldier preparing to wed Death was inspired by a centuries-old Cossack folk song, "Černyj voron." (Known also as Chjorniy Voron, Chorjni Voron, "Черный Ворон / Black Raven"). (The folk song was featured in the TV series Chernobyl, but this is a quite different take on the piece.)
This version is sung from the perspective of a woman soldier who has been pierced with an arrow and who, after sending the raven to tell her sweetheart and her mother, agrees to take death as her bridegroom and agrees to go with the raven.

Darkest Raven
Černyj voron, darkest raven
O’re my head now circling low
It seems that your prize will not elude you
With you raven, I soon will go.
Oh my groom approaches softly,
Our matchmaker sharp as time
Death himself has come to wed me to him
Černyj voronn, I am thine.
Bring my bridegroom
Black wings spinning
First the ending,
Now, beginning
Hold a moment, e’re you bring him
I must I ask of you this quest.
it seems that forever you shall have me
See this arrow in my breast.
Take this kerchief now so bloodied
To my sweetheart in his bed
Tell him he is free to find a new love
For another this day, I wed.
Bring my bridegroom
Black wings spinning
First the ending,
Now, beginning
Fly away now to my homestead
Where all I love there dwell
You must tell my mother who is waiting
That for our freedom I fell.
How my heart burns as I join him
Though our vows will go unsaid
Came the tempered arrow here to bind us
Černyj voron, now I am dead.
Bring my bridegroom
Black wings spinning
First the ending,
Now, beginning
Bring my bridegroom
Black wings spinning
First the ending,
Now, beginning

"The Donets in the Caucasus in 1801-1864 During a hard struggle with the Caucasian mountaineers, many Don Cossacks feared, many of them had to defend themselves from numerous and the spiteful enemy. The feats committed by the Don Cossacks during this sixty-year war are so numerous that it is impossible to enumerate them all. Many Cossacks died in the mountains and valleys of the Caucasus and over their unknown graves, there is neither a cross nor a memory Those who died alone, without witnesses, the Don died in the mountains, surrounded by crows and ravenous eagles, where this sad song of the Cossacks also originated." -- From the book of General Pyotr Krasnov "The Pictures of the Past Quiet Don" (1909)
