Описание: Wenshufang, located in central Chengdu beside Wenshu Monastery, is a cultural quarter that grew from the long history of the ancient temple. Its origins can be traced back to the Tang dynasty. According to tradition, the site of Wenshu Monastery was once the residence of the late-Sui minister Yuchi Jiong, later converted into “Xinxiang Temple” during the Tang period. As the monastery prospered, a small market gradually formed around it. By the Song and Yuan dynasties, with the rise of the cult of Manjushri Bodhisattva, the area became a bustling commercial street known throughout western Sichuan.

During the Ming and Qing dynasties, Wenshu Monastery expanded into “the foremost Zen monastery of western Sichuan.” Monks, pilgrims, and travelers flocked to the site, and a lively street market of teahouses, inns, and handicraft shops took shape outside the temple. Because the monastery enshrines Manjushri, the surrounding quarter came to be known as “Wenshufang.” As Chengdu’s commerce flourished in the Qing period, Wenshufang became a cultural hub where scholars and poets gathered and left behind a wealth of literary traces.

In modern times, as the city evolved, Wenshufang gradually transformed from a traditional market into a cultural neighborhood. Beginning in the 2000s, Chengdu implemented conservation-oriented renovation, preserving the area’s Ming-Qing street pattern and courtyard layout while introducing teahouses, folk crafts, and creative shops. This revitalized Wenshufang into a key window into old Chengdu’s way of life.

Today, anchored by the religious heritage of Wenshu Monastery and enriched by a blend of local traditions and urban creativity, Wenshufang stands as one of Chengdu’s most iconic cultural districts, full of warmth, history, and everyday charm.
