I spent every weekend and holiday sailing the beautiful waters of the Hauraki Gulf with my family, exploring the pattern of islands that exist off the Northland Coast. Our childhoods revolved around the boat, sailing, and exploring the stunning anchorages, safe swimming, and fiord-like waters.

Some may think this was a deprived childhood, but I learned valuable life lessons that have stayed with me to this day. I learned how to manage a sailboat, navigate with a chart and compass, and make decisions based on "the best course" for the future. I also learned teamwork, resilience, and how to overcome obstacles, as plans often need to be changed due to unforeseen circumstances.
