This short video documents Keep the Receipt – How Herne Bay Shopped, an exhibition exploring shop receipts from Herne Bay, Kent from the start to the middle of the twentieth century.
From groceries and household goods to long-forgotten local businesses, these small pieces of paper full of beautiful fonts and illustrations reveal surprising stories about how people lived, worked, and spent their money. The exhibition shows an intimate portrait of a seaside town through its everyday transactions.
Keep the Receipt – How Herne Bay Shopped 18 October 2025 to 10 January 2026
An exhibition inspired by a donation of receipts from shops around Herne Bay from the early 1900s and beyond.
Also featuring recorded oral history from Roger Turner, Keith Watson and Tony Willoughby.
