Just steps from Fair Park, this preserved 1925 home tells the story of a woman who changed the course of civil rights in Texas and across America.

From humble beginnings in Round Rock to her work at the Adolphus Hotel and education at Prairie View A&M, Juanita Craft became a leading force in the NAACP, helping to form 182 chapters statewide. She was the first Black woman to vote in a Dallas County election and fought fiercely to desegregate schools and public institutions, including Dallas ISD and the University of Texas Law School.

She made national headlines in 1955 by protesting segregation at the State Fair of Texas, which at the time only allowed Black attendees on “Negro Achievement Day.” Inside her small South Dallas home, she hosted civil rights icons like Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and advised presidents Lyndon B. Johnson and Jimmy Carter.

Now restored and curated by the South Dallas Cultural Center, this house is more than a museum—it’s sacred ground for Black Dallas and a space for education, reflection, and inspiration.
