"Gaudete" was first published in 1582 , as part of a collection of Swedish and Finnish sacred songs. It is played on a tenor sized Rebec (Medieval Violin).
This is made from a Yew log, with a Hare's head carved into the headstock, "Boxing Hares" carved into the fingerboard, and a "Trio of Hares" decorative sound hole. The Trio of Hares motif is seen all over the World, from Medieval English churches to Buddhist cave temples in China.
Rebecs are bowed string instruments from the Medieval era and the early Renaissance, from the 13th to 16th Centuries. They had from one to five strings and a body carved from a solid piece of wood. They were played by Troubadours, Minstrels and Musicians at feasts and gatherings.
