Hey, I'm Sam, I'm 31 and I’ve been taking sertraline (50mg) for just over a year now for anxiety and depression. In this video I’m talking honestly about my experience - the benefits, the side effects, and whether antidepressants actually work.
Before taking medication, I tried everything you’re “supposed” to try first: exercising loads, quitting alcohol, therapy, meditation… but I still found myself stuck in a cycle of anxiety, overthinking, social anxiety, insomnia and constant worst-case-scenario thinking. Eventually I hit a crisis point and finally accepted help.
In this video I cover:
• What antidepressants did for my anxiety and depression
• My first two weeks on sertraline (including the side effects)
• How long it took to start working
• Whether antidepressants work for me
• The improvements in sleep, spiralling, intrusive thoughts + social anxiety
• The side effects no one warned me about: sweating, stomach issues + brain fog
• How I managed those side effects
• Why I’m considering coming off it next year
• My thoughts on the stigma around medication
So if you've been worried about the side effects that antidepressants can sometimes have, or have just wondered whether they work, I hope this gives a clear and honest picture. There is zero shame in needing help and if you’ve got any questions, drop them in the comments and I’ll reply when I can - big love!
