On December 4, 1974, Sri Lanka witnessed its deadliest aviation tragedy. A Martinair DC-8-55CF carrying 191 people, including Indonesian pilgrims traveling from Surabaya to Jeddah, crashed into the fifth peak of the Saptha Kanya (Seven Virgins) mountains near Maskeliya.
The accident was caused by the pilots misjudging their location and descending too early, combined with the lack of radar technology and unfamiliarity with the flight path. The plane exploded on impact, leaving no survivors.
A memorial in Norton Bridge now honors the victims, whose bodies were laid to rest near the mountain according to Islamic rituals.
Remembering the 191 lives lost in this tragic event.
